MUS 1100 Introduction to Music (3 credits)

This course is a survey of western art music. After overviewing the musical terminology to be used throughout the course, students will delve into the medieval origins of western art music and track its development all the way to the modern day. During this exploration students will put to use their listening skills with the aim of developing a keen ear that understands music from a critical and objective standpoint. Students will also be asked to translate their reactions into writing. It is the goal of this course that, by the end of the semester, students will have gained an understanding and appreciation of music¿s role in western culture. Open to all students.
