THTR 1500 Introduction to Theatre (3 credits)

Introduction to the aesthetics and craft of the theatrical experience. Includes discussion of all aspects of the theatrical arts and production including critical viewing of performances with written analysis. THTR 1600 Introduction to Play Production (3 credits)

Introduction to the collaborative experience of communicating a script to an audience through a mounted production, with the understanding that dramatic literature is more than the written word on the page. The entire production process is examined, including business, management, technical production, and performance as well as the roles of the different individuals involved in theatrical production. THTR 2030 Playwriting I (3 credits)

Playwriting allows students to explore the human condition and human cultures in relation to behavior, ideas, and values expressed in works of human imagination and thought. Students will engage in critical analysis of a published script and original works created in the class. THTR 2220 Acting I (3 credits)

Introduction to the foundations of performance through the awareness, development, and observation of the actor's physical, emotional, and mental instruments. A highly participatory and interactive course plan leads the actor through vocal, improvisational, and interpretive scene work in stage performance, as well as the process of textual analysis and performance critique. THTR 2320 Voice and Articulation (2 credits)

Students develop skills that preserve and cultivate the speaking voice. Students of performance may have special interest in breath, rate, pitch, and volume control, but the course is designed to be of use to any speaker of American English.

This course develops the actor's physical, emotional, and mental instruments through the exploration of different styles of theatrical performance and character development. Explores how acting style is suited to fit the form and genre of a text, and leads the students through exercises aimed at developing the understanding of style in performance. This course explores these works within the context of the traditional importance of performance and storytelling and the political importance of these works in response to current social issues as a resistance to the ongoing process of colonization in the United States and Canada. THTR 3707 Asian Theatre: Classic and Modern (3 credits)

Survey of theatrical literature and production styles of East and Southeast Asia from traditional styles to modern forms and the encounters of these theatrical systems with the West. Particular attention is paid to understanding the religious and philosophical foundation of the aesthetics of these different forms, viewing examples of different performances and experimentation with performance practices. This course may include the study of thematically linked plays that cut across genres, time, and/or periods, or an in-depth study of the plays of a single writer or literary period. THTR 4783 Senior Seminar: Capstone Project (3 credits)

An examination and application of means of developing a well-designed and functional performance, exhibition of work. These projects may be individual or group generated and may be scholarly or artistic projects that are presented on-campus. The exhibition may be of theoretical or practical work. Prerequisites: THSP 3770 and THSP 3773, or 6 credits of THSP 3773; and consent of instructor.
