International Studies Course Descriptions

(INTL) College-Program: 09-59. Check with Department for quarter when these courses are offered. Read each course description for prerequisites.


160 FOCUS ON... (1 credit). Focuses upon a different nation or global region each time it is offered, as determined by the International Studies Council(Applies to Liberal Education Area VI, Area VII ).

200 *INSTRUCTED INTERNATIONAL TOUR (2-4 credits). A tour under the leadership and guidance of a BSU faculty member. Course content also includes pre-tour preparation and in- and post-tour discussion and assignments. This course may not be taken on an independent study basis. Credit for each offering to be determined by the International Studies program. (Applies to Liberal Education Area III, Area VII ). (May not be offered every year.)

201 *INTERNATIONAL STUDY EXPERIENCE - HUMANITIES (2-4 credits). Focuses on such topics as the history, culture, politics, geography, economics, art, language, technology, and education of the host country of a BSU international study program. Incorporates lectures, discussions, and demonstrations by instructors of the hosting institution and by BSU faculty. This course may not be taken on an independent study basis. Credit for each offering to be determined by the International Studies program. (Applies to Liberal Education Area II, Area VII ). (May not be offered every year.)

202 *COMPARATIVE INTERNATIONAL STUDY PROJECT (2-4 credits). With prior approval of a sponsoring department, each student will arrange to pursue academic problems or projects using an international perspective as a basis for completing a comparative study between cultures and/or countries. This course may not be taken on an independent study basis. Credit for each offering to be determined by the International Studies Program. (Applies to Liberal Education Area VI, Area VII ). (May not be offered every year.)

210 GLOBAL PEACE AND JUSTICE ISSUES (4 credits). Transdisciplinary survey of Peace and Justice Studies, with emphasis on understanding and solving four root problems in building a global future: ecological deterioration, poverty, sociopolitical injustice, and war. Employs a learning methodology of eliciting, clarifying, evaluating, and acting of personal value systems. (Applies to Liberal Education Area VI ).

211 INTERNATIONAL STUDY EXPERIENCE - SOCIAL SCIENCE Updated: (2-4 credits). Focuses on such topics as the history, culture, politics, geography, economics, art, language, technology, and education of the host country of a BSU foreign study program. Incorporates lectures, discussions, and demonstrations by instructors of the hosting institution and by BSU faculty. This course may not be taken on an independent study basis. Credit for each offering to be determined by the International Studies program. (Applies to Liberal Education Area V ).

230 THE GLOBAL ECONOMY (3 credits). Presents the world economy as a single, interdependent system. Students develop an awareness of how individuals in this system are affected by the actions of others and to develop an appreciation of the benefits and costs accruing to individual states as a consequence of their involvement in the system(Applies to Liberal Education Area V, Area VII ).

401 SEMINAR IN INTERNATIONAL STUDIES (4 credits).

420 CANADA: THE INTERNATIONAL ACTOR (4 credits). An introduction to the disciplines of Canadian Studies, including the history, geography, economics, environment, politics, literature, and mass media of Canada.
