Persephone’s Embrace by Kendra Carriere
The frozen Earth rumbles and shakes,
Wakes from its glacial slumber.
Between its stress and stirring appears a crack,
As if to disencumber.
From the ground erupts a flaming angel,
An icon of Holy Scripture.
Free at last from
The forces who once gripped her.
The Earth welcomes her with arms uncrossed,
Devoid of all demur.
Her presence did wake,
Resulting in a stir
Of weeping willows,
And waking robins, fluttering wings a blur,
A babbling brook, released from its static pose,
A trickle of trout set forth,
The leaves of newborn flowers reach,
As if to greet the virgin earth.
