Outdoor Program Center's 2011 slate kicks off Jan. 12

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Jan. 4, 2011) — Bemidji State University’s Outdoor Program Center kicks off its 2011 event and activities schedule next week with a ski and snowboard waxing clinic to begin a series of skiing-related activities through the end of the month.

Wednesday, Jan. 12 - ski and snowboard waxing
Using a few simple tools to get great results, OPC staff will teach participants how to tune and wax their own skiiing and snowboarding equipment. Students will learn how to sharpen edges, do base prep and repairs and how to hot-wax equipment using the correct glide wax. Participants are asked to bring their own equipment and whatever tools or wax kits they  have on hand.

The clinic will be held at the OPC’s Diamond Point Park boathouse from 6-8 p.m. and carries a fee of $10 for materials.

Friday, Jan. 14 - Buena Vista ski shuttle
The Outdoor Program Center’s every-Friday shuttle to Bemidji’s Buena Vista Ski Area begins Friday, Jan. 14. Riders should meet in the lobby of the Gillett Recreation and Fitness Center lobby; shuttles will depart at 5 p.m. and return after Buena Vista’s last lift at 8 p.m. The shuttles have a maximum capacity of eight passengers, so interested riders are encouraged to call ahead at (218) 755-2999 to reserve a spot.

Wednesday, Jan. 19 - cross country ski waxing
Waxing cross-country skis for grip and glide doesn’t have to be confusing. The OPC staff will be on hand to demystify the process of base preparations, choosing and applying a wax and finishing for the ideal glide. Participants will also learn the essential features of a basic wax kit, and will learn how that kit can be used to save money during a winter ski season.

The clinic is targeted at new skiiers and for recreational skiiers looking to take home some basic ski-waxing skills. Participants are asked to bring their own equipment and whatever tools or wax kits they  have on hand. The clinic will be held at the OPC’s Diamond Point Park boathouse from 6-8 p.m. and has a charge of $10.

Thursday, Jan. 20 - cross country ski lesson
An introductory cross-country ski lesson led by the OPC’s director, Mark Morrissey. For a fee of $10, participants will check out equipment from the OPC, have transportation to a local ski trail (exact destination will depend on trail conditions) and receive instruction. Transportation will depart from the Gillett Recreation and Fitness Center at 3 p.m. and return at 5 p.m. Participation is limited to eight skiiers, so those interested in the trip are encouraged to contact Morrissey at (218) 755-3900 and reserve a slot in advance.
