Traditional Skills Workshops return Oct. 2

Bemidji State University’s Traditional Skills Workshops, given by the university’s Sustainability Office as a way to pass along skills such as food preservation and knitting, return for the fall on Oct. 2.

This year’s schedule begins with a pair of related workshops on food preservation, presented by Karen Gebhardt.

The series kicks off Oct. 2 with “Intro to Food Preservation,” providing the basics for different types of preservation including canning, dehydrating and freezing. The workshop will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. at the American Indian Resource Center (AIRC), and is limited to 25 participants.

The series continues Oct. 6 with a three-hour workshop on canning tomatoes, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the AIRC. The workshop is limited to 15 participants, who will can their own tomatoes to take home.

Traditional Skills Workshops are free for Bemidji State students, and $7 for anyone else.

Interested participants can sign up at the Sustainability Office, located across from the information desk in the upper Hobson Memorial Union on campus, or by contacting Sustainability Coordinator Erika Bailey-Johnson,
