For the North. For Us All. BSU Launches $25 Million Fundraising Campaign.

As Minnesota’s premier North Woods institution, Bemidji State University today announces the launch of the public phase of its “For the North” fundraising campaign. With a goal of $25 million, the BSU Alumni & Foundation aims to raise funds to advance student success, upgrade campus facilities and boost enrollment efforts.

The “For the North” silent phase laid a strong foundation, securing more than $19 million since July 1, 2023. These funds have been strategically directed toward key priorities to elevate the university’s mission and impact. The targeted-initiative campaign’s three primary pillars are:

Student Success ($20 million goal)
Currently, 95% of BSU students receive some form of financial assistance, and increased scholarship support will directly impact their ability to access, persist in, and complete their education.

Facility Upgrades and Faculty Excellence ($3 million goal)
Investments in BSU’s physical campus and in faculty will ensure that BSU continues to deliver top-tier instruction and mentorship in environments that foster innovation, engagement, and pride.

Enrollment and Recruitment ($2 million goal)
Strategic support for enrollment marketing and outreach will allow BSU to better illustrate the power and value of a Bemidji State education — and welcome more students to the community.

President John L. Hoffman encourages alumni, friends and community members to participate in what he calls a “fundamentally transformational” opportunity for the university and for the region.

“With the public phase of the campaign, we are committed to engaging the broader community in shaping the future of higher education in our region,” Hoffman said. “We are so grateful for the generosity of those who believe in what we do, who we serve and where we are going.”

This is only the second fundraising campaign in BSU’s 106-year history. From 2011-16, Bemidji State raised $36.54 million through the “Imagine Tomorrow” comprehensive campaign. With “For the North,” the university anticipates reaching its $25 million goal in less than half the time.

BSU Alumni & Foundation executive director Allyssa “A.J.” Joseph said that “For the North” emphasizes what BSU stands for, and it leans into how individuals can channel their stories, gifts and experiences to help current and future Bemidji State students.

“Seeing our donors get involved is incredibly inspiring, and it’s always humbling in a way that truly transcends numbers,” Joseph said. “You simply can’t quantify the love and loyalty our donors and alumni have for their Bemidji State experience. This campaign is a bridge to hope, and it’s a powerful opportunity to drive philanthropic momentum forward for BSU and the North Woods.”

At Bemidji State, 95% of students receive some sort of financial aid. Joseph said this campaign will directly impact their access to not only enroll in college but also to pursue their degree to completion.

“We know the cost of college is only becoming more expensive, and it’s not just tuition; it’s housing, gas, food, childcare and more,” Joseph said. “Funding to support students when they can’t afford the total cost of attendance is a vital effort that will be a light for students in this campaign.”
