Students Offer Free Tax Preparation Services Through IRS VITA Program

Bemidji State University business and accounting students are offering free federal and state tax preparation and filing as a part of the Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.

The VITA program offers free tax help to people who generally make $67,000 or less with no Schedule C income, persons with disabilities, senior citizens and limited-English speaking taxpayers who need assistance preparing their tax returns.

Students who have completed BSU’s Tax I course and passed IRS certification tests will host weekly assistance sessions on Wednesday evenings from 4-6 p.m. in Memorial Hall, room 250. VITA is available on a first-come, first-served basis and no appointments are needed. However, filers must arrive before 5:30 p.m. to receive services. The weekly sessions will be available through April 15.

If attending a VITA session, refer to this list of documents to bring with you.

BSU’s VITA service is coordinated by Dr. Jeffery Everhart, associate professor of accountancy.
