Chantell Bergquist has always wanted to go to law school and came to Bemidji State for the 3+3 Law School Early Admission program through BSU and the Mitchell Hamline School of Law (MSHL). With the help of her BSU advisor, Bergquist is following her dreams of practicing family law at her own firm.

Program Appeal

I’ve wanted to be a lawyer since I was a sixth grader, so I’ve taken many steps to be able to start practicing law as soon as possible. I did PSEO while in high school, and I graduated with my AA degree before I even graduated from high school. When I heard about the 3+3 program, I knew it was for me because it would allow me to cut another year off school. The program allowed me to enter law school at 19, and I thought that it would be an amazing opportunity for me.

Why Study Law

I really want to help people through their tough times, especially those who can’t afford an attorney.

Why Political Science

I thought that studying political science would give me an advantage in law school by forcing me to be more analytical. Also, I really enjoy learning about the U.S. Constitution, law and politics, so I thought that it would be a good fit for me.

Most Valuable Experience

I was able to do an internship with the Douglas County Attorney’s Office prior to starting law school. I was able to gain real-world experience in the criminal law world, and I was able to build many relationships with prosecutors, defense attorneys, investigators, law enforcement, judges, etc.

Thoughts on Mitchell Hamline School of Law

Going through the initial stages of the application process I was nervous because I really didn’t know what I was getting myself into. My first impression of MSHL was positive because the admissions team was always there to help me throughout the application process. As a current student at MSHL, I know that the school is devoted to student success and they really try to create a community that feels like one big family. My favorite thing about MSHL so far is that I have been able to work with real clients as a 1L through the Self-Help Clinic.

Why BSU

The main reason for me was the 3+3 program, and that my advisor was more than willing to work with me to ensure that I would get into law school. Also, there are a lot of resources on campus that are there to help you to ensure that you succeed.
