Affording Your Graduate Degree
There are programs to assist you in meeting the financial obligations of a graduate degree.
Student Status
Students will have one of three classifications: Regular, Certificate/Licensure and Graduate Special.
- A Graduate Regular student is pursuing a master’s degree in a specific field of study. As a regular graduate student, you are eligible for financial aid as long as you are enrolled at least part-time.
- A Graduate Certificate/Licensure student is pursuing coursework towards the completion of a post-baccalaureate certificate or licensure. Most certificate and licensure programs are eligible for financial aid as long as you’re enrolled at least part-time.
- A Graduate Special student is pursuing graduate course work without a planned objective but with the goal of personal and/or professional enrichment. Graduate special students are ineligible for financial aid and will need to cover their own education costs.

In-State Tuition Rates
Whether you’re a resident of Minnesota or not, you’ll pay the in-state tuition rate. Tuition differentials may apply to specific courses.
Graduate Assistantships
Students seeking funding for their graduate degree should consider a graduate assistantship. Graduate Assistants receive a stipend and tuition waiver during their appointment. Typical assignments might be teaching introductory classes, working as lab or research assistants or serving in specific offices of the University.
