Nov. 1 Employer Regional Support session to focus on labor standards and new laws

BEMIDJI, Minn. — The Regional Employer Support Network will feature a presentation providing an overview of the Labor Standards Unit, including a discussion of new laws impacting human resource department procedures, from 9 a.m. to noon November 1 at the Bemidji State University Center for Research and Innovation, located at 3801 Bemidji Avenue North.

The fee for attending this quarterly session is $50. Early registration is encouraged and the registration deadline is October 25. Registration forms are available online at or by calling the CRI at (218) 755-4900 or (888) 738-3224.

Presenting will be Norman Olson, a labor investigator with the Labor Standards Unit of the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry, St. Paul.

He will discuss laws covering overtime, minimum wage, work breaks, deductions from pay, record keeping, payment of final wages, child labor laws and other labor laws. The session will begin with a PowerPoint presentation and conclude with a question and answer session. Brochures on the presentation topics will be available to participants.

Olson has been a labor investigator for about two years. He’d previously worked for 13 years as an investigator with the Minnesota Department of Human Rights, investigating discrimination claims, and for two years as a licensing investigator with the Minnesota Department of Human Services, investigating alleged maltreatment of vulnerable adults in state-licensed facilities.
The Regional Employer Support Network was formed after employers in the region expressed the need for a network of professionals involved in human resources development and management. It usually meets the first Thursday of each month with regular sessions lasting two hours and quarterly sessions lasting longer. The sessions are open to anyone interested in learning more about the featured topic.

CRI staff members help facilitate RESN activities, and organizations collaborating to support the group include North Country Health Services, North Country Business Products, Potlatch, Bi-CAP, Johanneson, Inc., Pinnacle Publishing and Anderson Fabrics.
