RESN hosts Oct. 2 session on reward and recognition programs

BEMIDJI, Minn. — Terri Pemberton will discuss successful reward and recognition programs as part of a 9 a.m. Regional Employer Support Network presentation Thursday, Oct. 2, at the Bemidji State University Center for Research and Innovation, located at 3801 Bemidji Avenue North.

The two-hour session is free and open to anyone interested in the topic, although it will especially benefit individuals who work in human resources or employee relations fields.

Reward and recognition programs are viewed as efficient and cost-effective means to reinforce the culture and support the goals of any organization or business. Popular activities in this area include years-of-service awards, employee of the month honors, and institution-wide social activities.

During the presentation, Pemberton will introduce ideas to make recognition programs work for the employer, both in terms of employee morale and productivity.

“Recognition inspires the employee’s performance and rewards the individual behaviors that collectively help a company attain its financial objectives and retain top performers,” Pemberton said. “Participants will learn ways to make their staff feel appreciated as well as inspire and motivate them for great performance and contributions.”

A human resource generalist with Johanneson Companies in Bemidji, Pemberton brought expertise in benefits and employee support to her current position after serving as a human resource employee relations manager with Leech Lake Gaming for nearly seven years. At Leech Lake Gaming, she created a working recognition program for more than 1,200 employees.

“Creating a culture where most of the employees feel they are valued was very complex,” she noted. “Having employees in on the formation of the whole concept was productive.”

The Regional Employer Support Network was formed after area employers expressed the need for a network of professionals involved in human resource development and management. It usually meets the first Thursday of each month with regular sessions lasting two hours. Lengthier quarterly sessions are also scheduled. CRI staff facilitate RESN activities with support provided by North Country Health Services, North Country Business Products, Potlatch, Bi-CAP, Pinnacle Publishing, and Anderson Fabrics, and Johanneson, Inc.
