BSU students volunteer to help local residents with tax returns

BEMIDJI, Minn. (March 24, 2011) — Bemidji State University students who have completed the Tax I course and passed Internal Revenue Service certification tests are donating their time to the community for the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.

The students have staffed free workshops on campus each Wednesday and Thursday since February, and will continue the workshops through Thursday, April 14, in Decker Hall 14 on the Bemidji State campus.

The student volunteers use their tax knowledge to provide assistance to other students, including international students with special requirements, low-income and elderly individuals in the area who may be uncomfortable or unfamiliar with tax law and filing requirements. The program not only offers free preparation, but also free e-filing for those who qualify.

A group of eight student volunteers also drove to Blackduck, Minn., on Saturday, March 19, at their own expense to donate their time for a four-hour free tax workshop for low-income and elderly taxpayers. The workshop was arranged by the Blackduck Community Resource Center.
