Hometown news: 27 students on cast and crew for "Proof"

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Nov. 10, 2011) — The Bemidji State University theatre program’s fall production, “Proof,” will open Nov. 11.

“Proof” focuses on Catherine, a young mathematical genius in and out of college who is struggling with mental illness after losing her mathematician father, Robert, who also suffered from mental illness. After Robert’s death, his ex-graduate student, Hal, discovers a paradigm-shifting proof about prime numbers.  The title of the drama refers to both that proof and to the play’s central question: Can Catherine prove the proof’s authorship?

The play explores Catherine’s fear of following in her father’s footsteps, both mathematically and mentally, and her desperate attempts to stay in control.

The drama has received multiple Tony Award nominations for best play, and won the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for drama.

The production is directed by Jesse Villarreal, a senior in theatre from Oakdale, MN; the stage is managed by Becky Cote, a junior in mass communication from Oklee, MN. Scenery is designed by Assistant Professor of Theatre Ellen Jones and Tom Skime, a junior in business administration and accounting Bemidji. Lighting is designed by Kelly Kirk, a junior in mass communication from Bemidji.

BSU alumna Elizabeth MacGregor stars as Catherine. Carissa Ries, a senior in design technology from Mankato, MN, stars as Claire; Bob Boland, junior in mass communication from Elk River, stars as Hal; and the part of Robert will be played by Patrick Carriere, assistant professor of theatre.

“Proof” will open Friday, Nov. 11 at 7:30 p.m. on the main stage of Bemidji State University’s Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex.  The play will also show Nov. 12, Nov. 18 and 19 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 20 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available now; $6 for non-BSU students and senior citizens and $12 for adults.  Bemidji State students are admitted free with a valid ID.
