BSU ‘Music Marathon’ kicks off March 20 (Student Life)

Beginning March 20, the Bemidji State University Department of Music will kick off a music marathon featuring five concerts and recitals in four days.

March 20: Julie Johnson
Julie Johnson is a flutist and composer active in the Twin Cities. She will be working with university students and presenting a concert of her own works and arrangements, performed on bass flute and electrified flute. She has recently been heard in many programs at the McPhail Center for the Arts, where she teaches flute, and at the Minnesota Fringe Festival.

Johnson’s concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Thompson Recital Hall in BSU’s Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex. Admission is free.

March 21: BSU Faculty Trio
Bemidji State’s Faculty Trio of pianist Dr. Stephen Carlson, associate professor of music; cellist Dr. Patrick Riley, professor emeritus of music; and violin player Melanie Hanson will perform Beethoven’s D Major “Ghost” Trio, and Brahms’ Piano Trio in B Major, Op. 8.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Thompson Recital Hall; admission is free.

March 22: Student and Faculty Recitals
Tracy Stein, a music education major from Fergus Falls, will present her junior recital featuring 20th-century works for flute.

Eric Olson, adjunct instructor in music, will present a violin recital.

Both recitals will be held March 22 at the Thompson Recital Hall. Stein’s recital begins 3 p.m.; Olson’s begins at 7:30 p.m. Admission to both is free.

March 23: Charles Lazarus
Charles Lazarus, a trumpeter with the Minnesota Orchestra, will bring his jazz combo to Bemidji for a 3 p.m. March 23 concert in the Thompson Recital Hall. Lazarus has been touring with his jazz combo as a side project from his work with the orchestra.
