Start your summer with sustainable landscaping course (Academics)

Learn what it takes to create landscaping that is rich in biodiversity and promotes the health of the environment at a free May 31 workshop sponsored by the Bemidji State University Sustainability Office.

With the summer planting season upon us, learn how sustainable landscaping can provide attractive, comfortable spaces that offer an alternative to manicured lawns that take time, money and resources to maintain.

The workshop, “Sustainable Landscaping: Weeds or Wonderful?” will be held from 9 a.m. – noon at BSU’s American Indian Resource Center. Parking and admission are free, although participants are asked to register as space is limited to a maximum of 30 participants. Register online at karvakko.com.

Local experts will discuss choosing locations and plants to benefit the soil and pollinators, including both native plants and vegetable gardening. This workshop is geared towards city residents, and includes information about what homeowners and renters can and cannot do with lots inside the city limits. However, everyone is welcome to attend.

Presenters include the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Beltrami County Master Gardeners, the Greater Bemidji Area Joint Planning Board, a landscape architect and a local permaculture expert.

This workshop is sponsored by the City of Bemidji Sustainability Committee, Karvakko Engineering and the Bemidji State University Sustainability Office.
