Shannon Combs | Relay for Life

Shannon Combs, a marketing communications major from St. Cloud, Minn., is the Co-Chair for Relay for Life at Bemidji State University. She chose to become involved with Relay for Life at BSU after losing loved ones to cancer.

“I had never heard of Relay for Life until I came to BSU. When I heard I could have the opportunity to join this organization and make a difference, I was all in,” she said.

Throughout her involvement with Relay for Life, Combs has learned she is a cause-motivated person.

“When there is something worth fighting for, it is incredible what a group of people can come together and do.”

The BSU Relay for Life organization typically raises $10,000 each year to donate to the American Cancer Society.

“Knowing that this money is helping cancer patients get the care and treatment they need — helping scientists to research how to put an end to this disease — makes any work we do more than worth it,” said Combs. “Being involved in Relay has taught me that by putting in hard work with the right organizations, you can make a difference.”

The Relay for Life event will be on March 3, 2018 in the Gillett Rec and Wellness Center. This event is an opportunity to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember those we have lost and fight back against this disease. Combs describes it as a walkathon/carnival, filled with games, food, and activities hosted by teams.

Students can be involved with Relay in two different ways. They can join the leadership team and help  fundraise or plan the event, or they can create a team of friends and fundraise. If you have any interest in joining Relay for Life, email Alina Vongkamdy and she will add you to the email list.
