New Hires and Appointments

  • Kim Fisher has joined the Office of Admissions as an admissions representative.
  • Josey Fog has joined the Hobson Memorial Union as associate director.
  • Jennifer Pirkl has joined the Student Center for Health and Counseling as a psychologist.
  • Jared Schmidthuber has joined the Physical Plant as a stationary engineer.
  • Amanda Wick has joined the College of Business and the departments of accountancy and business administration as an office and administrative specialist.

Faculty and Staff Achievements

  • Erika Bailey–Johnson (pictured, far right), sustainability director, traveled with a group of students to the Upper Midwest Association for Campus Sustainability conference Sept. 20-30 at Central College in Pella, Iowa. She presented the keynote address for the conference’s Student Summit, participated in an opening panel presentation and also presented during a breakout session.
  • Dr. Mary Fairbanks, associate professor of nursing, presented “What is Community Health? What is Public Health” Sept. 26 as part of Bemidji’s Adventures in Lifelong Learning series.
  • Dr. Dwight Jilek, assistant professor of music, presented “The Estonian Singing Revolution” as part of Bemidji’s Adventures in Lifelong Learning series. During Estonia’s effort to free itself from Soviet occupation in 1991, hundreds of thousands of people joined the revolution by singing publicly in a non-violent show of solidarity.
  • Dr. William “Bill” Scheela, professor emeritus of business administration, published “Beyond institutional voids and the middle-income trap: The emerging business angel market in Malaysia,” in the Sept. 2017 edition of the Asia Pacific Journal of Management. He also has given a series of presentations throughout the Asia-Pacific region:
    • “Impact of private-equity investors on developing high-impact entrepreneurial start-ups in emerging ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations)” at an April meeting of economic policy researchers at the Asian Development Bank in Manila, Philippines; and
    • Business angel investing in Southeast Asia” to an April meeting of students, faculty and investors at Help University Graduate School of Business in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and to a July gathering of students, faculty and investors at Renmin University in Beijing, China (July).

Scheela also participated in two panels at the World Angel Investor Conference, held July 7 in Beijing, China.

  • Dr. Sherry Shindelar, adjunct instructor of English, completed her doctorate in literature and criticism from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in August.  Her dissertation was entitled “‘Will you…?’ ‘I will…’ ‘I do’: Re-envisioning Matrimony in Civil War-Era Literature.”
  • Dr. Anton “Tony” Treuer, professor of Ojibwe, participated in a radio program called “Racism in Cook County” broadcast Oct. 5 as part of North Shore Community Radio’s Thursday community conversation series. The broadcast, which is archived on SoundCloud, was held in response to recent reports of racially motivated bullying incidents in Grand Marais schools.
