Bemidji State Faculty Research Digest – August 2021

Ryan Webber, adjunct instructor of music, participated in the 2021 Sinfonietta Memphis International Conducting Academy and worked closely with founder Dr. Kevin Sütterlin, director of orchestras at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, and Dr. Mattias Elmer, director of orchestras at Virginia Tech School of Performing Arts in Blacksburg, Virginia. As a result, he was selected from a pool of over 60 international applicants to be a guest conductor of the Sinfonietta Memphis ensemble on August 21 in Memphis, Tennessee. He will be joined by bassoonist Dr. Miriam Webber, assistant professor of music, who will perform with the orchestra.

Dr. Eric Forsyth, professor of human performance, sport and health, recently published an article titled “Contemporary Issues within High School Sports: Participation and Sportsmanship Issues.” The article, the last of a four-part series, is a result of a national research study that evaluates issues in the interscholastic sport arena and addresses common problems that athletic administrators encounter on a daily basis. Additionally, Forsyth co-wrote a chapter for “Contemporary Sport Management” and two chapters for “Branding in Higher Education: Every University Tells a Story.”

Dr. Timothy Goodwin headshotDr. Timothy Goodwin, associate professor of professional education, published second editions of “Within These Woods,” a collection of nature essays, and his textbook“Consider, Construct, Confirm: A New Framework for Teaching and Learning.” “Within These Woods,” first published in 2015, has recently been reviewed by the Star Tribune’s Pam Miller.

Dr. Eric Olson, assistant professor of music, received a Region 2 Arts Council grant that sponsored a May 2021 recital and week-long master class with Dr. John Gilbert, professor of violin at the Texas Tech University School of Music in Lubbock, Texas. The class was offered to BSU violin students and members of the Bemidji community.

Dr. Jennifer Olson, assistant professor of music, received a Minnesota State Arts grant to record an album of Latin American songs with Dr. Ana Maria Otamendi, a Venezuelan pianist, coach and conductor.

Under the artistic direction of Dr. Dwight Jilek, assistant professor of music and director of choral activities at Bemidji State, Dr. Eric Olson, also performed during digital concert with choral group Magnum Chorum. Jilek was appointed as artistic director of the choir in 2018.
