Choosing where to attend college remains one of the most significant decisions I have ever made. This was important to me because I wanted to continue my studies and earn my degree at a university I loved. I was looking for a place where I could meet great people, love the program I was in and ultimately feel comfortable and supported in the environment. I chose to complete my undergraduate studies at Bemidji State University because it far exceeded my expectations, and I couldn’t imagine myself anyplace else.    

I lived in the residence halls during my first year at BSU, and I encourage everyone going to college to do the same at some point. Making friends with people in your building and living on campus makes it much easier to participate in additional events. I have enjoyed my time at BSU in large part due to the incredible friends I have made. Because of our connections, the people I have met here will become lifelong friends. I go with my friends to get coffee, attend sporting events and study together. I place a lot of value on having a strong social network, and I don’t know what I would have done without my amazing friends if I hadn’t chosen to attend BSU. 

The Communication Studies program that I’m a part of is another reason I’ve stayed at BSU. When I first came to BSU, I was unsure of what I wanted to major in. I still felt comfortable here even when I was unsure, because my advisor and other mentors helped me explore a variety of alternatives as I worked toward achieving my goals. After taking a few communication studies classes, I immediately knew it was the place for me. The staff is what sets the program apart and takes it to the next level. The professors in the communication studies program are dedicated to your success. They take the time to get to know you as not only as a student, but as an individual — which was meaningful to me. I love the courses because they are interactive, and the material is important and useful for any career. 

The main factor in my decision to attend BSU and the reason I’m looking forward to being here through the completion of my degree was the environment on campus. The atmosphere is welcoming, diverse and supportive in many ways. BSU offers students a wide range of opportunities to get involved and feel included in the community. Clubs, organizations and on-campus events are just a few examples. There are also many resources available to assist you in making plans for your life post-graduation. I feel safe on campus and am aware that everyone is willing to assist me with any needs I might have.   

There is no denying BSU is a fantastic institution that genuinely cares about its students. One of the best choices I made was to enroll and remain at BSU for my college career. Without my experiences and what I gained from BSU, I would not be the person I am today. I was looking for a place that provided elements that were important to me, and I found them here. BSU is a great place to be because it provides outstanding academic possibilities, a welcoming environment and the chance to make lifetime relationships. BSU was the perfect place for me to continue my education after high school; perhaps it will be for you as well!
