Dr. Eric Olson: Inspiring Through Performance and Education

Eric Olson, assistant professor of music at Bemidji State University, continues to make a significant impact as a performer and educator with a series of prestigious engagements throughout the year.

His dedication to both artistry and education is evident in his upcoming and recent performances, master classes and presentations.

Olson will once again bring to life Ralph Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending, a staple of the violin repertoire known for its lyrical beauty and soaring melodies. He is set to perform the piece with the Bemidji Symphony Orchestra on May 11 at 3 p.m. at the Bemidji High School Auditorium.

Later in the year, he will reprise the performance with the Central Lakes Symphony Orchestra in Alexandria, Minnesota, on Dec. 7 at 3 p.m., continuing to captivate audiences with his expressive interpretation of the beloved work.

Earlier this season, Olson was the featured soloist with the Bismarck-Mandan Symphony Orchestra, delivering a compelling performance of The Lark Ascending on Feb. 8. In addition to his solo appearance, he shared his expertise with young musicians by leading a master class for local violin students, offering invaluable insights into technique, interpretation and musicianship.

He also engaged with concertgoers by presenting a pre-concert lecture, enriching their understanding of the piece and its historical and musical significance.

Olson’s influence extends beyond the concert stage. On Feb. 21, he served as a guest clinician at Shenandoah Conservatory in Winchester, Virginia, where he delivered a presentation to administrators, faculty and students on best practices for recruiting students into college music programs.

His expertise in student engagement and recruitment provides valuable guidance for institutions striving to attract and nurture the next generation of musicians.

In addition to his active performance and teaching schedule, Olson plays a vital role in the music community through his leadership positions. He serves as the director of the Bemidji Chamber Orchestra, coordinator of Bemidji State University’s string area and Concertmaster of the Bemidji Symphony Orchestra.

His extensive performance rsum includes collaborations with renowned ensembles such as the American Ballet Theatre, Kalamazoo Symphony and Minnesota Oratorio Society.

With a steadfast commitment to both performance and pedagogy, Olson continues to inspire students, audiences and fellow musicians alike, solidifying his reputation as a distinguished artist and educator in classical music.
