MnSCU Board of Trustees Resolution
The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Board of Trustees passed a resolution in March of 2010 in support of member campus efforts to become smoke and/or tobacco free. This site has a summary of board actions, with the information about this resolution about two-thirds of the way down the page.
Northwest Technical College Tobacco-free Environment Policy
Bemidji State University is aligned with Northwest Technical College and are served by one president for both institutions. Many administrative services are also shared between the two schools. This link is to NTC’s tobacco-free policy.

The American Nonsmokers’ Rights Foundation maintains a list of smoke-free air policies on college campuses. The list is updated periodically.

2000 Report from the Surgeon General on Reducing Tobacco Use
In 2000, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published then Surgeon General Donna Shalala’s report entitled “Reducing Tobacco Use”. The report is “an examination of the methods and tools available to reduce tobacco use.”

The American College Health Association (ACHA) acknowledges and supports the findings of the Surgeon General that tobacco use in any form, active and/or passive, is a significant health hazard.
2010 BSUSA Student Senate Student Smoking Survey(PDF)
The Student Senate conducted a survey about smoking in the Spring 2010 semester. The results were used to inform the legislation passed by the Senate in April of 2010.
2010 College Student Health Survey(PDF)
BSU works with the Boynton Health Service at the University of Minnesota to administer the College Health Student Survey annually. This document summarizes the results regarding tobacco use by Bemidji State Students from the survey conducted in 2009-2010.
U.S. Surgeon General’s Website
On December 9, 2010, Surgeon General Regina Benjamin issued a report entitled “How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease: The Biology and Behavioral Basis for Smoking-Attributable Disease.” This site has links to the full report, as well as a fact sheet and a short video with a message from Dr. Benjamin.
