As a Bemidji State student, it is your responsibility to let BSU know if you have a disability by providing documentation to the Accessibility Services Coordinator.

To get accommodations, you will need an evaluation from a qualified professional. This person should be trained to diagnose your particular condition. They’ll look at how your disability affects one or more of your life activities, such as walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, learning, working, caring for yourself or performing manual tasks.

Bemidji State University, like many other universities in Minnesota, requires documentation that shows your current disability status.

In your documentation, the professional should explain:

  • Your diagnosis or impairment
  • When it was first diagnosed and by whom
  • The assessments you took and their results
  • Your strengths and how you can use them to overcome weaker areas
  • Your current level of cognitive functioning
  • How your disability affects and limits your life activities
  • The specific accommodations the professional recommends and why
  • The impact on your learning if the accommodations aren’t available, and what alternative accommodations might work.

The accommodations recommended for you might include things like note takers, extended time on exams and separate test settings.
