BEMIDJI, Minn. (Feb. 2, 2010) — The Department of Music at Bemidji State University will present a concert by BSU Jazz I, featuring guest soloist Kathy Jensen on saxophone, on Friday, Feb. 5.
The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Carl O. Thompson Recital Hall of Bemidji State’s Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens. Students will be admitted free.
Jensen will perform three pieces at the concert, “Georgia On My Mind,” “Things Are Gettin’ Better” and “Softly, As In a Morning Sunrise.”
Also performing during the concert will be the John Konecne Jazz Quartet, featuring Konecne, a music and liberal arts major from Bemidji, on saxophone; Caleb Erickson on guitar; Lee Foster, a senior in music and liberal arts from Menasha, Wis., on bass; and Doug Quance, a senior in music, teacher certification and liberal arts from Bemidji, on drums.
Jensen is a member of Hornheads, a “Billboard” magazine award-winning a capella jazz group. The Hornheads have recorded three albums and have been featured on hundreds of tracks for artists around the world. From 1991-2001, the Hornheads recorded nine albums with Prince and the New Power Generation and toured with Prince in the U.S. and in Europe, Japan and Australia.
Before becoming a member of Hornheads, Jensen performed with many groups including the popular Moore by For, which performed and recorded at jazz festivals in Italy and Finland. She has played saxophone, clarinet and flute on recordings for artists such as Chaka Khan, Babyface, Phil Upchurch, Larry Graham, Tevin Campbell, Mavis Staples, Mandy Moore, Ben Sidran, Dave Graf, Ricky Peterson, the Steeles, Connie Evingson, the JazzMN Big Band and numerous others.
Jensen is a pit musician for musical shows and theatrical productions at the Ordway Center, the Children’s Theatre and Orchestra Hall and also has performed with the Minnesota Orchestra. Twin Cities performances with touring artists have included: Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Frank Sinatra Jr. and Natalie Cole.
