Symphonic Band to present Prism II concert, April 27

BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University Symphonic Band will perform a contemporary music program in a concert hall illuminated with prismatic lights in its PRISM II concert 3 p.m., Sunday, April 27, in the Main Theatre of the Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex.

The concert, which is offered free of charge, will feature music in a full spectrum of genres with each piece related in some way to light and color.

In a departure from traditional formats, the PRISM II concert will be presented continuously with no pause between pieces and no moment for applause until the very end of the concert. Also, various chamber ensembles - including a Japanese shamisen ensemble — will perform musical interludes from locations scattered throughout the auditorium.

“The PRISM II is the most unique concert of the year at Bemidji State,” said Dr. Del Lyren, professor of instrumental music and director of the Symphonic Band. “Last year was the inaugural event and there was not an empty seat in the Main Theatre.”

The Symphonic Band, now in its fifth year, focuses on contemporary music in a concert band setting and is open to all BSU students regardless of their major, including young music majors and music majors performing on secondary instruments, as well as community members.
