BEMIDJI, Minn. — A natural resources presentation entitled “Pursuing a Low Carbon Lifestyle” is scheduled for 3 to 4 p.m. Nov. 19 at the Bemidji State University Center for Research and Innovation, an off-campus facility located at 3801 Bemidji Avenue North. This Bemidji Area Natural Resources Continuing Education Consortium presentation is open to the public and free of charge.
Co-presenting will be Charles Krysel and Harvey Tjader, foresters from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Bemidji Area Forestry Office.
Although leading a carbon-neutral lifestyle may be out of reach for most, there is much that individuals can do to reduce their carbon footprints. Krysel and Tjader have been implementing some of those measures in an incremental approach and will draw on their experiences to present some tips and ideas that could help improve the environment and provide economic security at a household level.
“It’s not exactly ‘Living with Ed’,” Tjader said, alluding to the HGTV series in which actor Ed Begley Jr. promotes energy efficiency to Hollywood’s rich and famous. “We are working with limited budgets and less fanaticism, but I think our results may be just as significant.”
The presentation is intended to be informative and fun for general audiences, particularly homeowners. Attendees will receive a lifestyle assessment worksheet.
Krysel is a member of the board of directors of the Rural Renewable Energy Alliance. He has worked with solar energy installations and is a gardener.
Tjader describes himself as a gardener, bicyclist and do-it-yourselfer.
The talk is part of an on-going series of Bemidji Area Natural Resources Continuing Education Consortium presentations, usually offered on the third Monday of each month. Groups helping organize the natural resources consortium include the BSU Center for Environmental, Earth and Space Studies; the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources; Norbord Minnesota; the Chippewa National Forest; Beltrami County; the Leech Lake Division of Resource Management; Ainsworth; and the Red Lake Reservation.
The CRI is an off-campus facility operated by BSU designed to increase collaboration between the University, business and industry and other sectors of the region.
