Bemidji State University has appointed Dr. Randy Westhoff as associate provost and associate vice president for academic affairs. In his role, Westhoff’s primary responsibilities will include university-wide accreditation and assessment of student learning, curriculum review, budgeting for academic affairs, grant and contract review and supporting the deans in faculty hiring.

Dr. Allen Bedford, provost and vice president for academic affairs, said Westhoff’s skills and experience at Bemidji State make him a highly valued member of our academic leadership team.

“The remarkably wide array of functions the associate provost supports and the depth of knowledge needed to do that work well places high demands on the person holding the office,” Bedford said. “Dr. Westhoff meets those challenges with impressive doses of good insight, reliability, good humor and calm. I am delighted that he has accepted the position and I look forward to his continuing contributions to the healthy operations of the academic affairs division.”

Westhoff served previously as BSU’s interim associate vice president for academic affairs for four years, from July 2015 to July 2019 when he returned to his faculty position in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. He was again appointed to the interim position in 2020. During his interim appointments, Westhoff co-directed Bemidji State’s Higher Learning Commission assurance argument development team, co-authored the assurance argument and led BSU’s assessment activities. Additionally, he led BSU’s Gardner Institute Gateways to Completion project and contributed to several elements of the master academic plan, including the initial phase of the liberal education review process.

“I am honored to accept this position and am looking forward to working with faculty and staff across campus to advance our mission to serve our students and region,” Westhoff said. “BSU is a special place filled with talented and energetic people. I’m happy to join our leadership team on a more permanent basis and help lead the campus in uplifting our students and helping them excel in all aspects of their lives.”

Westhoff’s appointment begins immediately.
