Core Curriculum Form Instructions

Allcore curriculum and faculty curriculum forms can be found under MyBSU. Complete instructions for filling out and submitting core curriculum forms can be found here and below.

How to Submit the Proposal Summary/Signature Form

  1. Open the Proposal Summary / Signature Form on the Faculty Curriculum Forms webpage.
  2. Fill out the “Proposal Summary / Signature Form” on page two.
  3. Obtain the necessary signatures.

How to Submit the Course Modification and New Course Form

  1. Open the Course Modification and New Course Form on the Faculty Curriculum Forms webpage.
  2. Fill out the “Course Modification and New Course Form” under the left column heading “Current Course Information” on pages 1 and 2.
    • At the top of the 2nd page are the Core Curriculum Boxes (see image below).Core curriculum goal areas checklist
    • Within the Core Curriculum box in the left column, select the goal area(s) that you want your course to be listed within the Core Curriculum. You can select a maximum of two goal areas.
  3. On page 3, fill out the top half of the page. Do NOT fill out the bottom half indicated on the left side by “Complete only for new courses.”
  4. On page 4, fill out the page as instructed.
  5. On page 5, attach a sample syllabus for the course.

How to Complete the Core Curriculum Forms

  1. Go the Core Curriculum Forms webpage and click on the Core Curriculum Goals Area form for the goal area you selected previously. This will open the Word document form for the goal area.
    • NOTE: If you have chosen to list your course within 2 goal areas, then click on the second Core Curriculum Goals Area form.
  1. Fill out the Core Curriculum Area form or forms.
    • Step 1: General Information – Fill in the General Information
    • Step 2: Selection of Course Curriculum Learning Outcomes/Competencies to be Met by the Proposed Course
      Checkmark the Core Curriculum learning outcomes / competencies met by the course under consideration. NOTE: below the number of items that must be check marked for your selected GOAL AREA(S).
      • GOAL AREA 1: COMMUNICATION
        • Courses must provide for four of the seven listed competency (Core Curriculum learning outcomes) categories, A-G
      • GOAL AREA 3: NATURAL SCIENCE
        • Courses must provide for three of the five listed competency (Core Curriculum learning outcomes) categories, A-E
      • GOAL AREA 4: MATHEMATICS/LOGICAL REASONING
        • Courses must provide for three of the four listed competency (Core Curriculum learning outcomes) categories, A-D
      • GOAL AREA 5: HISTORY AND THE SOCIAL AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES
        • Courses must provide for three of the four listed competency (Core Curriculum learning outcomes) categories, A-D
      • GOAL AREA 6: HUMANITIES AND THE FINE ARTS
        • Courses must provide for four of the six listed competency (Core Curriculum learning outcomes) categories, A-F
      • GOAL AREA 7: HUMAN DIVERSITY
        • Courses must provide for four of the six listed competency (Core Curriculum learning outcomes) categories, A-F
      • GOAL AREA 8: GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE
        • Courses must provide for three of the five listed competency (Core Curriculum learning outcomes) categories, A-E
      • GOAL AREA 9: ETHICAL AND CIVIC RESPONSIBILITY
        • Courses must provide for three of the five listed competency (Core Curriculum learning outcomes) categories, A-E
      • GOAL AREA 10: PEOPLE OF THE ENVIRONMENT
        • Courses must provide for four of the six listed competency (Core Curriculum learning outcomes) categories, A-F
      • GOAL AREA 11: PERFORMANCE AND PARTICIPATION
        • Courses must provide for one of the three listed competency (Core Curriculum learning outcomes) categories, A-C

Goal Area 2: Critical ThinkingCheckmark one or more of the competencies/student learning outcomes met by the course under consideration.

    • Step 3: Consideration of Traits of Academic Resilience
      • Checkmark 1 or 2 of the six traits met by the course under consideration.
      • In 100 words or less (per trait), describe how you will integrate chosen trait(s) into the class.
    • Step 4: Assessment & Reporting 
      • In 150 words or less, please describe how you will ASSESS the core curriculum learning outcomes selected in Step 2 and the trait(s) selected in Step 3.
      • In 150 words or less, please describe how you will REPORT assessment of the core curriculum learning outcomes and trait(s) to the Core Curriculum Program Office.
    • Step 5: Supporting Materials
      • Provide a copy of the course syllabus.
      • NOTE: Use the “syllabus TEMPLATE” document to help you include the necessary information related to “Course Competencies for selected Goal Area and Goal Area #2” and “Traits of Academic Resilience.”
      • Provide representative material (example assignment, rubric, etc.) used to achieve and assess Goal Area learning outcomes and trait(s) (required).
