Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Student Fees

What are student fees

Bemidji State University assesses fees to all students to facilitate the operation of student support services and offices which are not funded by a student’s tuition. Student fees are listed individually in a student’s e-Services account, accessible via MyBSU on our website.

How are fees different than tuition

Tuition — which includes tuition differentials for certain programs — generally supports educational costs pertaining to academic learning and teaching, such as academic building maintenance, classroom facilities, course materials, teacher salaries, college staff, university administration, and the library and its databases. There are some specialized fees that are assigned to specific programs and courses, however, which are not meant to cover all students. When these specialized fees apply to you, they will be reflected on your e-Services invoices as Personal Property Fee, depending on the type of charge approved for that course.

Under what authority does Bemidji State charge these fees

Bemidji State University is a member of the Minnesota State system of colleges and universities. Fees are charged pursuant with Minnesota State Board Policy 5.11 Tuition and Fees. The policy is available on the Minnesota State system’s website for review.

Who pays student fees

All Bemidji State students are assigned fees based on the number of academic credits you’re enrolled for in a particular semester.

If I want access to services not included in my fees, may I pay those fees separately

Any student may purchase access to services that are not included in their billing statement by contacting the Office of Records & Registration.

Can students opt out of paying fees

Since the services funded by these fees are available to the general student body, they are mandatory for all students.
