Director, School of Graduate Studies

  • The Director of Graduate Studies oversees all functions pertinent to the coordination and administration of the School of Graduate This includes providing administrative and policy interpretation assistance to the Deans, chairpersons, coordinators, faculty, staff, and students by maintaining a working knowledge of university and Graduate School policies and procedures and by assisting in the coordination efforts of diverse departments in reaching graduate school goals.
  • The position exists to direct the activities of the School of Graduate Studies, acting with the Provost’s The individual occupying the position must maintain student records and information associated with University policy and procedures in Graduate Studies and assist in the development of new policies and practices related to graduate education at Bemidji State University. The individual is responsible for: a) supervision of the administration of the School of Graduate Studies’ budget, b) supervision of all graduate student program requirements; c) meeting with the university’s graduate committee, d) contacts with other MnSCU graduate studies offices, e) facilitating a strategic plan for graduate studies at BSU that includes student recruitment, program marketing, and student retention, and f) representing the School of Graduate Studies at system wide meetings and outcomes associated with those meetings.
  • A thorough knowledge of and execution of University policy and procedures are a direct responsibility of the individual in this In addition, the individual has responsibility for admissions, records, program advising, and related functions for each graduate student in advanced programs and courses. Development and implementation of a more formal program advising function (similar to undergraduate advising office duties) and a possible teaching function are planned for this new position.

Staff, School of Graduate Studies

  • Office Administrative Specialist (OAS)-Full Time
    • This position exists for the purpose of providing students an easy transition from undergraduate education to graduate education either through licensure, certification, or masters degrees.
    • This person processes all incoming graduate applications; prepares correspondence and other documents to communicate directly with students, faculty, and staff; prepares purchase orders and provides appropriate follow up.
    • This person maintains access to graduate studies records in the Integrated Student Records System (ISRS) and is expected to retrieve data through queries created by this individual.
    • Acts as receptionist and answers phone calls from prospective or current students as well as the general public. Provides work direction for 1 full-time Graduate Assistant and 1-2 student workers.
    • Other assignments as given by the Director, School of Graduate Studies.
  • Graduate Assistant-Full Time
    • The GA works a maximum of 14 hours per week and has the same duty days as faculty.
    • Reviews research/thesis/final papers/projects for accuracy using APA and MLA formats and guidelines laid out in the BSU Handbook for the Preparation of the Research Paper/Thesis.
    • Maintain graduate files in ISRS and ImageNow databases
    • Maintain spreadsheets for graduate surveys
    • Maintain current database for graduate faculty; and
    • Other assignments as given by the Director and OAS.
  • Student Workers: 1-2 employees ten hours per week each.
    • General office duties as instructed by Director and/or OAS
    • Responsible for running office errands on a regular basis
    • Records/Scans all forms/documents that pass through our office; and
    • Other assignments as given by the Director and OAS.
