Proof of English Proficiency

Undergraduate Students must meet ONE of the following requirements. Request that official copies be sent directly to the International Program Center at Bemidji State University:

  • TOEFL: Minimum score for undergraduate students is 500 on the paper-based test or 61 on the internet-based test.  TOEFL test code for Bemidji State University: 6676.
  • IELTS:  Minimum score for undergraduate is 5.5.
  • SAT : Undergraduate students minimum critical reading sub-score of 400 or higher or SAT Reading sub-score of 22. SAT test code for Bemidji State University: 6676.
  • Transferring from a U.S. college or university: Minimum of 24 credits of college/university-level work (remedial courses and ESL do not count toward the 24 credits) that includes at least 2 college-level English courses with a B or higher.
  • Michigan English Language Assessment Battery(MELAB) : Minimum score of 70 with a cover letter from testing institution.
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) : Minimum score for undergraduates is 47. Only scores accessed via the Score Report website are considered valid.
  • Duolingo English Test score of 95 or better.
  • Graduation from a U.S. high school: Student must have physically attended classes in the U.S. and must have a minimum GPA of 2.0.
  • ELS Educational Services: Completion of course 109 or higher.
  • MELP: Completion of all Level 3: Advanced ESL classes in the Intensive English Program with an S grade.

Graduate Students must meet ONE of the following requirements. Request that official copies be sent directly to the International Program Center at Bemidji State University:

  • TOEFL: The minimum score is 550 on the paper-based test or 80 on the internet based test.  www.ets.org/toefl/ TOEFL test code for Bemidji State University: 6676.
  • IELTS:  Minimum score is 6.5.
  • MELP: Completion of all Level 4: High-Advanced ESL classes in the Intensive English Program with an S grade.
  • Transferring from a U.S. college or university: Minimum of 24 credits of college/university-level work (remedial courses and ESL do not count toward the 24 credits) that includes at least 2 college-level English courses with a B or higher.
  • U.S. Degree: official transcript of U.S. accredited Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctoral degree.
